Deciding to begin therapy could be one of the most challenging decisions you face for you and your family. Identifying that you need additional support and accepting the challenge of allowing someone to step in and provide you with that support is a major step in the right direction and requires a lot of courage. 

Counseling is more than telling a stranger your problems. It’s a decision that will enable you to learn how to manage your stress or circumstance, giving you the energy you need to pursue your goals and live a more peaceful, satisfying and fulfilling life.

As a counselor, I provide a person-centered approach building on a client’s strengths while incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness techniques. I can provide support and treatment with issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief support, marriage/couple/premarital counseling, substance abuse and behavioral issues.

Individual Therapy

During individual counseling, the client and therapist work together to develop a personalized treatment plan to address the client's specific needs and goals. The client can explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and beliefs, and learn to evaluate issues more objectively. The therapist can help the client identify solutions and develop problem-solving skills.

Couples Counseling

Couples therapy is a type of therapy where a romantic couple works with a trained professional to address relationship issues, improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their bond together; essentially, it's a way to work on problems within a partnership through guided discussion and skill development with a therapist.
It aims to identify and address specific problems within a couple's dynamic, like poor communication, trust issues, or power imbalances.

Grief Counseling

Grief counseling, also known as bereavement counseling, is a process that helps people deal with the emotional and psychological stress after a loss. Grief counseling helps people work through normal feelings of sorrow, or more extreme reactions to loss. These reactions can include behavioral and physical problems, extreme mourning, and being unable to separate emotionally from what or who was lost.

The biggest challenge you will face is having the courage to do what you know needs to be done in your life. We spend a lot of time focused on the next step or finding our motivation without recognizing sometimes that is where we self-sabotage.  

Imagine planting seeds, nurturing them so they grow and right when they sprout above ground uprooting the plant to do something else. You will never see the full growth potential if you move around or quit every time you need to feel like you are doing something of value.  

Having the courage to keep pushing forward even when the spark is gone is tough, but the reward is in the finished product once you see it through to the end. So keep taking those steps and stay the course. Feeling uninspired is normal, but don’t let it hold you back.

The Different Faces of Depression

Depression does not look the same for everyone. Many families assume that depression looks very sad and tearful but in reality depression takes on many different forms.

When checking on your friends and families it is important to not only pay attention to what they are saying and doing but also what is not being said or done. Have their routines changed? Are they isolating more? Are they becoming more irritable and angry? If it’s a child or adolescent are they acting out behaviorally? Have their grades dropped in school? Are they becoming more argumentative and are consequences becoming less effective?

Depression can be hidden by a mask that most don’t see until it’s too late. 

What to expect in Pre-marital Counseling?

Pre-marital counseling is important to help set the tone for your marriage. Every marriage is unique and has a foundation that is built by two significant individuals who are one of a kind. Your marriage is even more unique but you have not defined it yet.  Here is what you can expect:

  • 6 hour process that covers conflict management, communication skills, financial responsibilities, child/parent expectations and extended family roles.
  • Discount on marriage license as long as your certificate is within 12 months of your marriage.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is something we all face but some struggle with it more than others.  If you struggle with controlling your anxiety;  ground exercises are a great coping strategy to manage your symptoms.  

Anxiety is your body’s response to stress. Anxiety essentially is the anticipation of a future threat.  Have you ever started overthinking so much it led you down a rabbit hole?  Well, grounding exercises help to return your mind to what’s happening in the present moment so you feel less threatened.

Grounding exercises are simple techniques that use your five senses or tangible objects, things you can touch, to help you move through distress.  Here are a few to get you started:

The cold hard truth

Most of us go through life wondering and questioning are we on the right path. We start seeking counsel from our family, friends, co-workers, teachers, pastors anyone that we think is knowledgeable enough to know the answer knowing the whole time we have already made up our minds in what we are going to do.

The truth is every time someone ask me a question it’s very clear they already know the answer. They already know the relationship was not going to last before they got into it, they already know they are undervalued at their job, they already know they cannot afford that purse, they already know getting “flewed” out is never really free and the cost may be more than they want to pay, they already know that friend has not been a true friend since they met.

The cold hard truth is you know he is not good and it wouldn’t last but you have convinced yourself that it’s okay to maintain that relationship so you are not alone while you figure it out. The truth is good relationships don’t end.

The cold hard truth is you want that purse because you believe having expensive things symbolizes your worth. The truth is a pig with a Birkin is still a pig.

The cold hard truth is you know they are not your friends but you fear missing out. The truth is you trust them because you don’t like you and you would rather have a fake friend for photo ops than peace with yourself because you want the invites for IG.

The cold hard truth is your intuition is talking to you constantly but when it does not align with your agenda you will convince yourself that you have uncertainty. God is not the author of confusion, so when we are “confused” is it that we really don’t know or we are not getting the reply we want. Imagine what your life would be like if you just faced the cold hard truth and learned to walk in your truth.

Are you overcorrecting yourself and your life?

Did you know that you were born thinking and believing you were great until people started teaching you that you were not?

Overtime we pick up on rules and expectations often projected by other people’s fears and insecurities. When people started telling us how to dress, what to eat, or even how to be you begin to question your own instincts about yourself and the process of disconnecting from you has begun.

We start to believe if we trust ourselves we would ruin our life. When overcorrecting we start to assume everything about our lives is wrong and we create problems within ourselves that don’t exist.

Overcorrecting becomes an endless battle because you are no longer trying to get better in order to actually be better. You are trying to get better in order to prove to someone else that you’re worthy of their love, attention or time.

We have to learn to get back to our true selves. Start making simple decisions based on what we like, how we think and what we need. When we accept ourselves exactly as we are something amazing happens: we finally become everything we were meant to be. Always remember you cannot hate yourself into a life you love!

Can you really lose your worth or value?

The value of a dollar is 100 cents. No matter how you break it down the value remains the same. If you bend or fold a dollar does the value change? If you crumble it up, step on it, get it dirty, spit on it, or even damage it does it lose its worth or value?  It does not matter how much it’s abused or neglected it’s still a dollar. So if the value of a dollar does not change based on the things it has been try why would you think for a second your value changes based on what you have been through? There’s nothing that can happen that can take your value away or change your worth so pick yourself up, dust yourself off, tape yourself back together, hold your head up high and remind yourself of who you are! Know your worth!
